Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters after the Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos. He quickly responded to questions about his decision to bench starting offensive guard Kingsley Suamataia.
“It’s just between Kingsley and I,” said Reid, not revealing any details about his latest decision. This marked the second game this season that a coach’s decision replaced Suamataia with veteran Mike Caliendo as a starter. A similar scenario took place before the Week 4 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to ESPN’s Nate Taylor, who spoke with Kelce after the game, Suamataia’s latest absence from the lineup was a mystery.
“He’s family. Everybody has their own road. We love Kingsley; we think he’s a hell of a player,” said Kelce.
“At this time, I’m not even sure what the scenario is. I’m rolling with whoever we’ve got in that game. I’m sure Kingsley is drooling, trying to get back out there.”
Suamataia was a second-round pick from BYU in 2024 and emerged as an impactful offensive guard after switching from left tackle as a rookie. He started all 17 games last season and played in 98% of the offensive snaps at guard.
