Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith spoke with reporters on Friday. He discussed the opposing defense's pass-vs.-run decision and his blocking approach based on running back personnel.
"Yeah, I think that just having a great running back room and schematically getting things going with the run game just allows our offense to be that much better," said Smith. "And it definitely wears down defenders and adds a level of unpredictability as well. They're not really anticipating pass every play or anything like that. You keep them honest, keep them on their toes while also wear them out, so you don't necessarily get their rush in that impression too."
Smith opened about changing his approach with running backs like Kenneth Walker and Emmett
Johnson. Their presence affects his chances of getting another opportunity to block downfield.
"Just trying to finish a play, where it's a pile or anything of that nature," said Smith. "Like I said, they're going to keep fighting for yardage, so we've got to keep fighting for them as well."
Walker praised Smith and the offensive line's contributions shortly after being named AFC Offensive Player of the Month.
