Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters on Wednesday before practice. He opened up about the recent passing of former defensive lineman Allen Bailey.
The passing of Allen Bailey. Our hearts go out to his family. Prayers are with them," said Reid. "Way too young, obviously. One of my favorite players. Great, great kid and just sorry to see that happened to him."
According to a report from TMZ, Allen's wife found him dead yesterday inside their Florida home. The family believes he died from natural causes.
"Just a good guy. Yeah, good guy. I drive in every morning, coal miner rode there, and I don't see a possum, and he was a big hunter. And I say, " Saw a possum out there. He goes, "Don't eat those possums. They eat garbage.
I get the ones that eat the chestnuts," Reid said. "So I mean, you know, he was just, he was that kind of guy. He was an outdoorsman, and then he was dirty tough, and talk about giving an honest down. He gave you an honest down every snap."
Bailey was selected by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft after starring at the University of Miami. He spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Chiefs before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 2019.
"It's terrible. It's terrible, terrible, especially with all the good he does, and you know, and he's got a family and that whole thing," said Reid. "That's a sad deal. I know his father passed away young too, and it's just, you know, it's life, but it makes you sick when you know it happens to somebody that young."
Bailey played 133 regular-season games, recording 22 sacks and 248 combined tackles in his career.
