Chiefs vs. Broncos sets new record in ESPN’s Monday Night Football era

The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos made history in ESPN’s ratings after their highly anticipated Week 1 Monday Night Football matchup.

According to an ESPN press release, last Monday’s matchup drew 23.2 million viewers across ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, and NFL+, making it the most-watched Week 1 game in ESPN’s Monday Night Football era. ESPN has broadcast the weekly spectacle since 2006; among all ESPN MNF games, the AFC West battle ranked as the third-most-watched telecast of the era.

The Chiefs won largely thanks to a dominant defense, a breakout debut from running back

Kenneth Walker III, and a successful injury comeback by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The packed crowd at Arrowhead Stadium served as the perfect backdrop for the record-breaking night. Travis Kelce moved into second place on the all-time tight end receiving yards list, head coach Andy Reid won his 150th game with the Chiefs, and general manager Brett Veach won his 200th career game.

The records are based on Monday Night Football telecasts played only on Monday nights; games played on non-Monday nights, including Week 18, are excluded from all comparisons.
