Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones spoke with reporters after the Week 1 victory over the Denver Broncos. He credited the recent training camp intensity for this year's rookie class development and shared his thoughts on Monday's victory.
"I'm not going to say it feels different. This is a positive way, and there is a lot of momentum we can go into, heading into the season. It's still one game," said Jones. "There is a lot we can learn from it. I feel like there are a lot of plays, as a defense, that we left on the field. We are going to watch film and see what we can get better at. We will use this momentum off of this win."
Jones notably recovered a fumble in the Week 1 victory as the Chiefs' defense dominated throughout the night.
The multiple-time Pro Bowler credited the coaching staff's recent training camp plan with speeding up the development of younger players and the rookie class.
"I think training camp. Back in training camp, how hard training camp was. In 11 years, this was my hardest training camp. You can see the young guys' fight, day in and day out, and their mentality during training camp," said Jones. "With training camp, you can learn a lot about what type of team you are going to have. The fight during those hard days, those back-to-back days, and those long drive drills that Coach Reid gives us, I have seen these guys battle through it. Not only battle through it, but push themselves to the limit. It showed up on the field tonight."
Impressive performances from young players on both sides of the ball sparked the team's dominant Week 1 victory. Kansas City will play again in prime time on Sunday Night Football, hosting the Indianapolis Colts.
