This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired running back and NFL Players Choir member Dwayne Wright.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Wright discussed his participation in 'The NFL Players Choir' and their recent performance of the National Anthem at Arrowhead Stadium ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 2 game this season. He weighed in on the Chiefs' plans for a new stadium and the expected relocation.
"The game now in the NFL is all about entertainment more than when we played. I mean, the biggest takeaway is Taylor Swift coming to the games. She's there, she's in it, she's dancing that sells," said Wright. "Then you think about all the celebrities, like whatever hot team, whoever wins the Super Bowl, that attracts. Arrowhead,
that's what I remember growing up. I went there once when I was growing up; my dad took me there to experience the electric environment. But sometimes you may need a new start."
The $3 billion state-of-the-art stadium in Kansas will be fully enclosed with a translucent ETFE roof and will seat about 70,000. The stadium's seating bowl resembles Arrowhead Stadium.
“I'm a San Diegan. We lost Qualcomm Stadium. We lost that stadium, so that was the heart. When they went to Los Angeles, we started seeing more fans from different places, and there were more of them. There was more space outside of tailgating. It was just a different experience for fans," said Wright. "All in all, I'm a Chief fan. After I retire, I'm a Chief fan till I die. I say I like the move. I think it's time for the move. I think when we came and pulled up into the parking lot, I'd never seen anything like that. I'm a (former) Buffalo Bill, a die-hard fan. I mean, we walked into the (Arrowhead) stadium, sat down to eat, and it was just red. I didn't see any other fans. If I did, I missed them. That is what you need to build in the city, and it helps with jobs, especially in that area. It helps with opportunities."
The new stadium will start a new chapter in Chiefs history; it will also let Kansas City and the Midwest host national events such as the Final Four, the College Football Playoffs, and the Super Bowl.
"We performed on the biggest stage. So hopefully, we'll be invited back to do the halftime show rather than the Star-Spangled Banner. The presentation was dope. Like, you know, from the start to the finish, just everything," said Wright. "We really enjoyed it as a group, and a lot of fans were coming up to us like, 'Come back, come back! It's like this. We ain't in control of this, but if you want us to come back, tell them we want to do the halftime show. We'll come back. We'll do that in a brand-new stadium."
Founded in 2008, the NFL Players Choir has become a distinctive presence in sports and entertainment, introducing audiences to another side of NFL athletes through inspiring vocal performances.
