This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired 8-time Pro Bowl defensive back Patrick Peterson.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Peterson, who participated in this year's American Century Championship, held at Edgewood Tahoe and aired on NBC and Peacock, discussed his history with former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu, dating back to their college days at LSU.
"I just think we're so much alike, like we have like the same work ethic, we have like the same goals, and I believe honestly that's what drew us close to each other. It's a lot of things that can go unsaid when we're around each other, or when we were on the football field, to where we know what each other's thinking." said Peterson, "I honestly feel like it was always
a genuine connection from day one when I met him in 2009 as his recruiter host, taking him down to Tiger Land (LSU Tigers) and having the different conversations we had during his visit."
The duo was dominant during their time at LSU and later with the Arizona Cardinals, with each making the Pro Bowl. Mathieu would later join the Chiefs and help lead them to a Super Bowl LIV victory.
"I was just always like, if this kid comes here, he's going to be special, because the things that he's talking about, and the goals that he had for himself, that's how I saw it too." said Peterson, "A lot of kids talk about it, and a lot of kids talk a big game, but to actually be doing it and putting your words where your mouth is, I saw that, so I gravitated towards that, and he gravitated towards what I was saying as well, and that's how I just kicked off from there, and we just became close, and everything else was history."
The annual tournament awarded $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities.
