Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters Monday about the team's penalties in the Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos.
"Very similar to the things that I saw then, that I saw on the tape now, and really, the number of penalties- we've got to take care of that. Having over 100 yards of penalties is not a good thing," said Reid. "Offensively, it really came down to that. You win the game if you don't have the penalty on the score there at the end, with very little time left on the clock."
The Chiefs were penalized 11 times for 105 yards during their 28-24 loss to the Broncos last Sunday. Reid didn't call out one penalty as more important than another, focusing on how each infraction contributed to the latest defeat.
"So, every one
is important; attention to detail is important," said Reid. "We've got to go back, and we've just got to make sure we refocus ourselves on making sure we're doing the right things fundamentally, start some practice, and put a concentrated effort forward to that."
The false start call against offensive lineman Jaylon Moore that nullified a game-winning touchdown pass in the fourth quarter will stay in many fans' minds. Reid maintains that it's important not to leave the game in the officials' hands.
"Yeah, so I'm a big equal opportunity guy. Whatever is happening, just make sure it's the same way for both sides, and that becomes important," said Reid. "So, I think the officials try to do that to the best of their ability. And then there are going to be calls you don't agree with; that's part of it, but it is what it is, so you've got to roll with it. I don't like penalties; they upset me. You want to make sure that you're not taking things away from yourself. The games are too close and too hard."
Kansas City is no longer leading the AFC West entering Week 9 against the New York Jets back home at Arrowhead Stadium.
