The Kansas City Chiefs are adding a familiar face to their practice squad on Monday after days of speculation.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said during his weekly Zoom call with reporters that the team is adding veteran wide receiver Justin Watson to the practice squad. After being released by the Houston Texans, Watson immediately brings knowledge of the Chiefs' system and could be a reliable elevation option this season.
Watson first joined the Chiefs in 2022 and has known plenty of winning since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted him in 2018, including his first of three Super Bowls. During his three seasons with the Chiefs, Watson played roles on special teams and as a wide receiver while serving as a respected locker room leader.
"Yeah, well,
he was a good player for us when he was here; he obviously can run and is fast, and he's got great size. He's willing to do everything," Reid told reporters. "He knows the offense. He's a smart kid, so we felt like he could come back in, contribute as needed, and step in and go. I mean, with just a slight review, he should be fine and good to go."
Tyquan Thornton was also on his way to being placed on injured reserve after dislocating his ankle in Week 4. Watson finished his last season with the Chiefs in 2024 with 22 catches for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
