Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach DeMarco Murray recently spoke with reporters. He addressed how to manage running back Kenneth Walker III's per-game workload and his efficiency in the offense.
"I like the start that (Kenneth Walker) he's started with the first two games as far as running the ball, catching the ball out of the backfield. I think he's prepared the right way, obviously through spring, through training camp, and obviously you see it throughout the course of the early season," said Murray, "But he comes to work every single day with the right mindset, and we're lucky to have him. I'm lucky to have him in our room. But, again, just a great leader for us, vocal when he needs to be. But again, he leads by example, which I love.
And, again, he's done a great job for us."
Walker has made an immediate impact on the Chiefs in two games, giving the team a much-needed dynamic on offense. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week 1.
"I know (Kenneth Walker) he probably wants to be in every play, but just making sure you manage that load, but then at the same time knowing that Emmett's (Johnson) there and he can come in as well. Yeah, I think that all comes back to his work ethic. He's prepared himself for this since spring and since camp. And Coach (Andy) Reid puts a great camp together, and the long drive drills have been legendary around here.
After two games this season, Walker leads the NFL in rushing and scrimmage yards. He's also accumulated 47 carries while making plays in the passing game.
"Kenneth has done a great job at getting himself in shape and, again, knowing that, hey, obviously we need you in the first quarter, first half and whatnot, but we're going to need you in the third and fourth as well," said Murray. "So, we pride ourselves on obviously finishing strong just as much as we start the game. So, again, he's put himself in a great position with his work ethic to carry the load. And, again, he's a running back, so he likes the ball a lot, and I like giving it to him."
The Chiefs will look to keep Walker fresh and healthy heading into the early bye week, while rookie Emmett Johnson continues to develop.
