Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke with reporters on Thursday. He commented on the effective pass rush in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
"Yeah, listen, this game is all about confidence, and you get a little frustrated when you don't finish with the completed, whether it's catching an interception, forcing a fumble, or making a sack, and we've been really close," said Spagnuolo. "I think George (Karlaftis) has had a lot of pressure and guys have had hands on, but it's kind of twofold. When that happens, and you're not making them, you've got to figure out how to be under control and finish it."
Karlaftis had eight pressures last Sunday after 11 in Week 4; he continues to lead the NFL in that category since
Week 4 with 19 total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. The Chiefs pressured Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on 17 of 44 dropbacks in Week 6.
"We did a little bit better job of that this past week," said Spagnuolo, "and hopefully that continues because when the quarterback—it's a little bit demoralizing when you do really good on the coverage end and they do really good rushing the passer, and yet he finds his way out of there, and they complete it, but it was good to get a few of those last week."
The Chiefs had 4 sacks against the Chargers. Ashton Gillotte had two quarterback hits and 1.0 sack; Chamarri Conner had four solo tackles and 1 sack; and Chris Jones and rookie Peter Woods each recorded 0.5 sack on the final drive.
