Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters recently after practice. He discussed his plans to use rookie running back Emmett Johnson's versatility in the offense after a standout preseason.
"Well, I would tell you (Emmett Johnson) his pass protection. We knew he could run the ball, but the thing we had to see was pass protection," said Reid. "And for him to be that number two back, you've got to be able to do that, and he was a smart kid, and he was willing to stick it up in there. So, he did a nice job of it."
During his four seasons at Nebraska, Johnson appeared in 41 games, tallying 2,460 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 458 attempts. He also had 92 receptions for 702 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Reid has often pushed
his running backs to do more to protect the quarterback, especially with Patrick Mahomes returning from a serious knee injury. Johnson finished the preseason with 123 rushing yards on 26 carries and held up well in pass protection through the three games out of the backfield.
