Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke with reporters on Thursday. He explained defensive issues against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2.
"Well, I was telling somebody, we're probably not as good as we were in the first week and hopefully not as bad as we were in the second. Yeah, well, no. No, it was the other way. We didn't reaffirm," said Spagnuolo, "No, we didn't do a good job there. Listen, we were happy we won, and I will say this- I was really proud of the way they responded after the big play. That was huge."
In a notable overtime stand last Sunday night, Kansas City held the Colts to only a field goal after a 50-yard completion put them at the Kansas City 17-yard line. The Chiefs held Indianapolis to two net yards
over the next three snaps, preventing a potential game-winning touchdown.
"I mean, that said a lot about this group, you know, certainly Nick (Bolton) and Drue (Tranquill) on the inside," said Spagnuolo, "But it was hard not to think about all the other stuff, and the reason we were in overtime and in that situation is because we kind of let the team down in certain areas. But thank God we got away with a win; we can learn from it, and hopefully it'll ignite us to play a little better this week."
Nick Bolton and Jaden Hicks both tallied 10+ tackles in Week 2, with Bolton recording 13 tackles (six solo) and Hicks recording 10 tackles (five solo). Each defender recorded a tackle for loss.
