This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with TV Analyst and former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Green joined the unveiling of the Dr Pepper "Fan Wall of Fame" painting on the side of the Alumni Hall building at his alma mater, Indiana
University, curated by Indianapolis artist Nate Baranowski. He discussed his ongoing support for Indiana University."Well, I'm going to be honest; it was hard for me to actually say those words because that wasn't in the realm of thinking for Indiana football." said Green, "Fortunately, I was part of an era with Bill Mallory as our head coach when we went to a bunch of bowl games and the program did well, but we were never in the conversation as top-10 or national-champion
contenders or anything like that. So when the season got going last year, and you saw what was unfolding, and the comeback win on the road at Oregon. The comeback win on the road at Iowa, and then the comeback win on the road at Penn State."
Green played for the Indiana Hoosiers and was later selected by the San Diego Chargers in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. He proudly traveled to watch the Hoosiers' 2025 postseason run.
"Then you get to the national, or you get to the Big 10 championship against Ohio State, and come away with a win there, and then all of a sudden the playoffs happen. Oh no, we got to play Alabama. Alabama is Alabama, and to beat them up the way that they did, I believe the score was 38 to three in that game," said Green. "All of a sudden, you start to feel okay. If the last thing didn't make you start believing, then this next thing is going to make you start believing. Then the next thing, and then you could see the momentum building not only around Bloomington, around the Big 10, but also around college football, and then as it was going along, I was able to get to the Peach Bowl."
The Hoosiers were led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza and Chiefs offensive lineman Kahlil Benson to an undefeated National Championship campaign.
"The second game against Oregon was the semifinal for the national championship, and I was part of that. And when we got into the stands, for me it was really cool because I got to be with a bunch of my former teammates, many of whom I hadn't seen in 20 to 30 years." said Green, "We're all celebrating before the game, and then that very first play, the pick-six that Pons has- the stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, just erupted. I know people were saying on TV, "Oh, it's maybe 70/30, 80/20. That stadium was like 90/10, maybe 90% Indiana, and the level of noise as soon as Ponds picked that ball off, it was like, "Oh my gosh, here we go!"
