Sunday in Jacksonville was truly one of the worst games that any fan of football has been subject to in a very long time. The Cleveland Browns rolled out Deshaun Watson to start the game, on the heels of precisely zero good football since he came to Cleveland.
Now, for those who live under a rock, Watson is now in his fourth season with Cleveland, and yes, that entire time has been a disaster. The Browns have really tried to thread a needle and get as much as they possibly could from Watson, but it has yielded them nothing but despair.
In Watson's final year on the team, they tried one last time to let him prove he can do anything on the field.
As a surprise to no one, he didn't in Week 1.
The Browns' day got off to a nice start. Dylan Sampson had
a great kickoff return, which led to Cleveland's first drive. Two plays into it, the Browns were in plus territory, thinking about actually getting points on the board. Then, Monken dialed up a play-action pass and, of course, Watson took a defender right to his throw with his eyes, and he was picked off.
That interception was basically the end of the day. It gave the ball to the Jaguars, who punched it down the field and into the end zone. The rout was on.
The Browns were only able to muster 272 yards of total offense, 46 of which came on the final offensive play when Watson connected with Denzel Boston for a 46-yard bomb, which was objectively an awesome play. It had zero relevance to the game and was against all backups, but it was a nice connection.
No one knows what the Browns' plans are at the quarterback position because none of this makes sense. Cleveland told us that Deshaun Watson gives them the best chance to win. That's clearly not true. They said that he gives us the best chance to get in and out of the huddle with a clean operation; the three presnap penalties would tell a different story.
Watson has shown zero redeeming qualities as a quarterback, and Browns fans are somehow stuck watchinghim for the foreseeable future.
Anyone would be a better option than he is at the position, but they will likely roll with him at least for one more game before making a change. Once that change comes, hopefully it is a sign of better days to come for this Cleveland Browns team, and more importantly, for you, the fan.
