The long-awaited news that Vikings fans had been hearing rumors of since the preseason dropped on Monday around lunchtime.
It came down from The Ringer's Tom Pelissero when he reported
that the team was trading away J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings were trading him to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, which shows that the value of the former top pick has fallen off over the years since being drafted.ESPN's Kevin Seifert added a wrinkle to the trade news. He shared some information from the Elias Sports Bureau. Seifert explained, "J.J. McCarthy is 1 of 4 first-round QBs in the past 25 years to start 10 or fewer games for the team that drafted them."
The other three quarterbacks are not the company someone hopes to make when
they are a top draft pick. They were:
- Paxton Lynch
- Trey Lance
- Johnny Manziel
Now, as it relates to the Browns, Johnny Manziel was a different type of player and situation. Manziel only played in so few games due to what he was doing off the field, while McCarthy has struggled to stay healthy, and the team has had success with other quarterbacks.
The Manziel era had its moments, it was fun for a few stretches, but now he gets some new company among the top draft busts in the last 25 years at quarterback.
