There will be no Jadeveon Clowney reunion for the Cleveland Browns.
The former first overall pick and defensive end during the 2021 and 2022 seasons has opted to head back to Houston instead of signing in Cleveland. Clowney has inked a deal with the Texans to end his free agency.
Clowney went on to say that the decision to sign with Houston over Cleveland was an easy one, and not a decision that came down to a dollar figure. Here is what Clowney had to say on returning to the team that once selected him with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft:
"I've grown up and learned the game a lot more since leaving... I feel like I can help the younger guys. I've learned how to lead and what it takes to get to a Super Bowl. I feel like I can help this
team."
Looking at the Browns' DE depth in training camp
Instead of reuniting with Cleveland, the rich get richer in Houston, leaving the Browns still fairly thin behind their two starters. While Jared Verse, a two-time Pro Bowler, and Alex Wright, who just signed a contract extension a year ago, are a solid duo upfront, the depth behind them is lacking.
This is not a knock on Isaiah McGuire, who in himself is a strong rotational defensive lineman. However, the cupboard is barren beyond McGuire. Behind McGuire is practice squad player Julian Okwara, and then three rookie undrafted free agents in Logan Fano, Tyreak Sapp, and Khordae Sydnor.
Look for the Browns to continue to poke around for another depth piece off the edge.
