When the Browns and head coach Todd Monken announced the plan for the quarterbacks to each get a start, it made complete sense. Deshaun Watson had earned the first chance against the Bears, and Shedeur Sanders would start at home. In theory, that would mean both get to play with the first-team offense, but it seems that may not be the case.
Based on what Monken told the media on Sunday, that may not be the case.
He told the media in regard to Sanders getting the same chance and players as Watson that, "Again, I did feel going into last game that it was relatively close in terms of both having an opportunity at the starting position, so it would be unfair to not go into the next game and give Shedeur that same opportunity," Monken said. "Albeit
a different team, certainly at home. There's no guarantee the same players will be playing in this game, but it's the closest you have, and we owe it to both players who have handled it well and competed at a high level."
"The closest you have" doesn't show this is a fair situation right now.
For Sanders, he'd already have to show a lot of improvement based on what he showed in the preseason opener. To have to do it with not the best players at his disposal is another bump in the road. However, if he can show he can overcome an added hurdle, that would further his potential to get back into this quarterback battle.
