The Cleveland Browns made a big move last offseason to secure the future of their defensive backfield. Right before the trade deadline, they made a deal to send Greg Newsome to Jacksonville in exchange for Tyson Campbell.
Campbell definitely caught the short end of the stick as he went from one of the premier AFC teams to a rebuilding Browns roster. That said, Campbell came to Cleveland and put together a strong finish to his season.
He was really good for the Browns on the other side of Denzel Ward and proved to be a very valuable asset for the Cleveland defense.
Now, Campbell enters this season staring down his first opportunity for a full season in Cleveland, and of course, it begins in his old home of Jacksonville.
On Wednesday, his former teammate
and quarterback Trevor Lawrence spoke about Campbell and what he means to him. He said, “That’s a guy I’ll always root for, not on Sunday, you know. Hopefully, we can learn from him a little bit. But seriously, I have no bad things to say about him. I think he’s a great player, a great person, and does things the right way."
Ever since coming to Cleveland, Campbell has been largely quiet but has had a very loud game for the Browns' defense. Last year he played in 12 games for Cleveland, finishing with 53 tackles, grabbing one interception and registering 12 pass breakups.
He is going to be a major piece for the Browns' defense in both the short term and the long term. At some point, Cleveland is going to have to prepare for life after Denzel Ward, and Campbell will be at the center of those plans.
On Sunday, his old quarterback may not be rooting for him,but going forward, he will have a fan from northern Florida. Hopefully, he can become a key piece of the Browns' defense for several years to come.
