The Cleveland Browns offense had a rough week on the road in the pouring rain against the New York Jets, scoring only 12 points in the team's second loss of the season. After the running game looked a little better against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team took a massive step back against the Jets, with running back Quinshon Judkins averaging just 3.1 yards per carry on 14 carries.
ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi highlighted the run game as the issue the Browns must clean up if they want to jump-start this offense moving forward.
"If the Browns want to field a consistent offense to complement their sturdy defense, they have to run the ball more consistently. Quarterback Deshaun Watson's rushing yardage (40) nearly matched that of running back Quinshon Judkins
(44), who averaged just 3.1 yards per carry. The struggles on the ground led to too many third-and-long situations, where the Browns struggled with the Jets' pressure looks. Watson was sacked a season-high eight times against New York."
As Oyefusi highlighted, being in third-and-long is a bad recipe, especially for a team that is relying so heavily on young players to contribute. Fixing the run game has got to be the biggest priority right now for Todd Monken and his coaching staff.
