After Week 5, a lot has already changed in the NFL. For the Browns especially, they are now 3-2, a record no one could have predicted. The main reason for that record is that the defense has turned itself around, and Deshaun Watson is playing like the player everyone thought he was when they traded for him.
However, have yet to see a complete game from Watson, so it has us believing a change is coming at quarterback in 2027 regardless. Thus, we move on to another set of rankings after another week of college football.
We will provide a top-five ranking, with players just on the outside looking in. This group already looks good after just one week, but it's only been one week. Deeper analysis will come later, so this is a more reactionary take
with some added reasoning for their placement.
With the stage set, here is how things look after Week 6 of the college football season.
Just Missed the Cut:
- Drake Lindsey, Minnesota
- Dante Moore, Oregon
- Julian Sayin, Ohio State
- LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
- Jayden Maiava, USC
5. Darian Mensah, Miami (FL)
Week 6: Bye Week
Darian Mensah drops a few spots after a Bye Week that didn't allow him to showcase himself while others did. In Week 7, he will be facing Florida State in a rivalry game that will be against a defense that has shown they can create headaches. It will be a test he needs to look great in, and it should help him build momentum back up with his stock.
4. Austin Simmons, Missouri
Week 6: 14 for 28 passing, 147 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception
Simmons threw the first interception of the season in Week 6. It wasn't the usual dominance that we have seen this season, but the arm talent remains on display and looks good. Simmons will face his old team, the Ole Miss Rebels, and it will be a showcase game for him that scouts will be looking at closely. If he plays well against their talented defense, he could firmly find himself in the round one discussion.
3. CJ Carr, Notre Dame
Week 6: 14 for 20 passing, 181 passing yards, and three touchdowns
CJ Carr did what he was supposed to against a less-than-ideal Stanford defense in Week 6. He has finally gotten more yes on him, including mine, and the throwing motion and decision-making are about as sound as anyone's in the class. Notre Dame has yet to be tested by any tough teams, but Carr keeps passing these simple ones with flying colors, and it has him among the best prospects at the position.
2. Drew Mestemaker, Oklahoma State
Week 6: 19 for 28 passing, 304 passing yards, and three touchdowns
Drew Mestemaker remains at the number two spot for me after six weeks of the season. The arm talent is fully on display, and I believe he has the best arm in the class. He and Austin Simmons are close in terms of zip, but the strength that Mestemaker has tips the scale. Oklahoma State has a tough matchup in Week 7 against a talented Houston team, and if he passes that test, then maybe he becomes QB1.
1. Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Week 6: 20 for 30 passing. 213 passing yards, three touchdowns, and one interception
Trinidad Chambliss remains the king of the quarterback rankings as he remains the best playmaker at the position. Going against Missouri will be a fun test for him, but it won't be the final one. If he continues to showcase his dual-threat ability and arm talent against the teams he has left to face in the SEC, then he could cement himself as QB1 before the draft process even begins.
