Whatever you thought the Brownswere going to put on in week one against the Jaguars couldn't have possibly been close to what they actually did. The Browns played one of, if not the, worst games that they have since Deshaun Watson became the quarterback of this team.
It is hardly a surprise because,looking back, he hasn't been any good since the year 2020. The last time that he was a competent quarterback, one that could lead a team to the playoffs, people were required to stand six feet apart while wearing a doctor's mask.
But, in typical Browns fashion, they rolled him out as their starting quarterback in the year 2026, and for 95 percent of the game, there was nothing positive to take away from what we all were forced to watch.
However, that
probably didn't surprise many people. The biggest surprise and overreaction to this football game is that the Browns' defense might not be very good.
That side of the football gets the benefit of the doubt, at least for now. Cleveland has seen a lot of change on that side, and they have to find a way to piece it all together. They have a bunch of personnel changes, and the biggest one is a change in coordinator. All of that aside, they were completely torn apart on Sunday by Liam Coen and Trevor Lawrence.
Cohen had that defense dialed up, and Lawrence could not be stopped. Everything that has been a concern about that group is even more of a concern. The depth on that side of the football in both the secondary and the offensive line is bordering on a disaster, and it is such an obvious shortcoming of this team.
The Browns generated zero pass rush, and outside of Denzel Ward, they couldn't cover anything. It was a disaster for a unit and a side of the football that everyone was excited about heading into the season.
It's no secret that things were going to be bleak for the Browns this year, but no one expected it to be this bad. Now, the Jaguars are one of the better teams in football, which only underscores how far away the Browns are.
Sunday was a disaster, but most of it was to be expected. It is impossible not to overreact to the fact that the Browns' defense is potentially a very major problem this season.
