Ohio State football cornerback Jordan Thomas is the latest freshman invited to "the brotherhood."
Thomas had his black stripe removed after practice on Tuesday, earning recognition that the coaching staff likes what it sees from the young player during the preseason. Fellow freshman Legend Bey, a running back, also lost his stripe on Tuesday.
Thomas was a four-star cornerback in the 2026 recruiting cycle. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he was the No. 104 overall player in his class. He enters a strong but crowded defensive backs room this season.
The black stripe is one of the most exclusive traditions in Columbus. Brought by then-head coach Urban Meyer from his previous coaching stops, it has turned into a tradition that Ohio State
fans can use to monitor the progress of their new players. Newcomers arrive in Columbus with a black stripe going through the middle of their helmets. Once the player has shown enough on and off the field that suggests they understand what it takes to be a Buckeye, an announcement is made, and a celebration is held.

For Thomas, the removal of the stripe happened before his very first real collegiate game. Fans of the Buckeyes will hope that is a sign of a bright future in Columbus.
