College football season is in full go and the Ohio State Buckeyes look to bounce back from a loss at Texas in Week 2, when welcoming Kent State to Columbus this weekend.
We like to look ahead to give you some things to look forward to when it comes to each Ohio State football matchup, and it's no different with this game. As you would expect, OSU is a heavy favorite at home.
Here are three things to look forward to in the Ohio State vs. Kent State matchup on Saturday.
Jeremiah Smith's Potential Record-Breaking Game
Could this be the day that more records are broken in favor of all-time great Jeremiah Smith? He is currently second on the career receiving yards list -- just 26 yards from breaking the record held by Michael Jenkins. At 2,873 yards in his career, Smith will likely break that early
in Saturday's game -- going over 150 yards in both games to start the year.
While he will still need a few additional games to get there, he also is sneaking up on the all-time Buckeyes career receptions list -- currently fourth and still 26 receptions from that record. That's not all... He's fourth on the career touchdown list and is just five behind tying Chris Olave with 35.
Ryan Day's Dominance Against The MAC
It's the MAC, and the programs in the conference haven't had a great record against the Big Ten, especially the top of the league. This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Ohio State and Kent State, with the Buckeyes winning the first three by an average of over 50 points per game.
Beyond that is Ryan Day's record against MAC teams, which is 7-0 -- and an average margin of victory of 51.7 points a game, scoring almost 60 points themselves. Ohio State has rarely struggled in these games and, coming off of a loss, the expectation is this won't be a close one in Columbus.
Former OSU Women's Basketball Star To Ring Victory Bell
One of the top honors ahead of an Ohio State football game is who rings the Victory Bell. Past bell ringers have included the likes of Archie Griffin, John Cooper, Jim Tressel, Jerry Lucas, and Urban Meyer. Ahead of the season opener this year, it was Maurice Clarett. This week, the honor goes to former women's basketball star Katie Smith.
Smith, who played in the early 90s, was inducted into the Ohio State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 and later the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. She joined the Buckeyes coaching staff as an assistant in 2024.
