Ohio State head coach Ryan Day stepped to the podium for his weekly press conference, and what was on everyone's mind was where things stand with the quarterback situation. We know Julian Sayin is out "indefinitely' injured, and we know true freshman Luke Fahey was QB2 coming out of the Indiana game, but we don't know where things stand a little over a week later.
The Buckeyes have had extra time to practice during the off week, one in which Day confirmed that former five-star commit Tavien St. Clair would also get an opportunity to compete to be Sayin's replacement.
It all raised eyebrows, and wo it didn't take long to get the first question from the local media on where things stand, if a starter would be named, and what the plan was heading
to L.A. to play USC. Day didn't commit completely to either quarterback and said there are still a few days to confirm things.
"Both quarterbacks practiced well," Day said. "It was a good energy. The guys were rallying around both guys ... We'll kind of see how the next couple days go. But they've both been really into it and practice was good last week, so we need to stack a few more days, and then we'll kind of go into the game and figure out what gives us the best chance to win."

“Well, I think both quarterbacks practiced well last week, which was good. There was good energy. Guys were rallying around both guys.
And we’ll keep working this week and keep working on packages for both guys. Luke was ahead of… pic.twitter.com/22THAqUBA7
So, in other words, we don't really know much, and we'll either have to wait until later in the week for other media appearances, or see who trots out from the sideline into the huddle in Southern California on Saturday night.
I guess, in some ways, it might be a positive sign that St. Clair is still in the mix. He's got the measurables and reputation coming out of high school, and being in the program for a year adds some intrigue. On the other hand, Fahey seems to have an "it" factor about him that already had him ahead of St. Clair heading into the season. Day said that the competition seems to have invigorated St. Clair a bit.
"Sometimes when you find yourself getting the second- or third-team reps, you can find yourself maybe going through the motions," Day said. "This has been re-energizing, and just more of a locked-in approach."
Is this a case of neither guy grabbing the job, or having two guys capable of keeping this Big Ten title and College Football Playoff thing between the guardrails? We'll just have to wait until later in the week, potentially, to find out, and according to Day, we may even see both of them play Saturday.
