The Bills spent Sunday tripping over their own mistakes, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson made sure the biggest one belonged to the Los Angeles Chargers.

"You go fishing? What's that word you use to catch fish? What's the word?" he asked reporters in the locker room after the win. "Bait. Great bait. That's a great fishing play."
Buffalo had just turned it over for the fifth time — Josh Allen lost the ball on a Khalil Mack sack — when the Chargers drove to the Bills' 23-yard line with a chance to go up two scores. Facing third-and-5, Justin Herbert pushed a throw toward Marques Valdez-Scantling near the end zone, and Gardner-Johnson
jumped the route for the interception, racing 41 yards to near midfield.
"They'd been giving us opportunities all day," the safety added. "And I told my DB, I told my corners, and nickels, go press and I'm there over the top no matter where you at and I'm going to come get you."
Taking the ball away is what the veteran safety does. He has recorded six interceptions in two different seasons, the most recent coming in 2024 during the Philadelphia Eagles' run to a championship.
Herbert has been rough on deep shots all year, completing just 1 of 12 throws 20 or more yards downfield with three picks, and the Bills left a few more takeaways on the field. Maxwell Hairston let a first-quarter pick slip through his hands, and Gardner-Johnson's second takeaway was erased by a Christian Benford holding penalty.
"He's a good quarterback," but you know, " Gardner-Johnson noted about Herbert. "He trusted his arm. I think he get everything in there, which is not bad for a quarterback like him on his caliber. So, I feel like I had to capitalize on the on the tight throws, and I think I capitalized today on a good one."
The win was historic in its own strange way. Per ESPN, Buffalo had not pulled off a win with a turnover margin that ugly since 1997, when it beat the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts' starting quarterback that day: Jim Harbaugh, now patrolling the other sideline in Los Angeles.
For the safety, he sees the potential and called it out in the locker room after receiving a game ball from head coach Joe Brady.
“I feel like we a championship team.”
Next up the team hosts their division rival and defending AFC Champion New England Patriots on Sunday as the to go after a 4-0 start to the season.
