One of the highlighted areas of the Buffalo Bills throughout the offseason was the change from former head coach Sean McDermott running the defense to defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard now calling the shots.
It is expected that it was close to being a complete overhaul and we have seen some aspects of that such as Leonhard now running a base 3-4 defense (three linemen) as opposed to McDermott's 4-3.
But Leonhard admitted we have not seen it all just yet. Ahead of facing the Houston Texans in Week 1, the Bills' defensive coordinator said his unit has not been full-go, but it will be on Sunday.
And that makes sense. It's just the preseason, why take away an advantage?
"There's core elements to what we do that were obviously out there in the preseason,"
Leonhard said. "The biggest thing is, I'm not going to give away too much scheme."
As far as those who have seen the defense going at full speed, Buffalo head coach Joe Brady, who hired Leonhard, gave his seal of approval.
"I think his personality fits exactly what I was looking for," Brady said via video conference. "I think we have a lot of good conversations. I got so much trust in him. I'm excited for him to get back calling plays because that's what he's deserved."
The Bills are set to face a Texans team with similar goals as them this season. Houston sports an offense led by quarterback CJ Stroud with plenty of playmakers around him. Leonhard's play calling will play a huge part in spotting the Texans.
