The Bills have been generating plenty of headlines out of training camp in Pittsford this week.
And now one of the NFL's most plugged-in reporters has weighed in on what he saw there.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport made the Rochester rounds with Buffalo, and reported back on "The Pat McAfee Show" about his trip to St. John Fisher University as part of his camp tour.
His review on Thursday described a locker room that has clearly bought into first-year head coach Joe Brady.
"A lot of juice from Joe Brady," Rapoport said. "I think the players like that. They have kind of bought into the new energy."
Rapoport also framed Buffalo as an unusual first-year job — because the roster Brady inherited is not one that needs rebuilding.
"This is a weird, different
situation, because the team is already good," he added. "He's not like a first-year coach taking over a team where he's got to get them to a place. They're there. They need to be like a couple plays better."
Rapoport also said the people who worked alongside Brady during his run as pass game coordinator at LSU weren't remotely surprised he ended up with a head coaching job.
"I remember talking to people who worked with him at LSU, and I was like, 'Are you surprised he's the head coach in the NFL?'" he noted. "They are not. They thought he was head coach material even as a young pass game coordinator at LSU, just because he's pretty dynamic."
As has been previously reported, the Bills learned something important about themselves during the coaching search.
"Some of the feedback the Bills got about themselves was, on defense, they were way too predictable," Rapoport reiterated. "Their defense would sometimes — it just wasn't quite good enough. And hiring Jim Leonhard, they think, is going to change that."
Rapoport called Leonhard "another really good, bright young mind," and said he "liked a lot of what he was having to say."
His summary of the operation in Rochester: "some pretty good positive vibes."
