Buffalo Bills coach Joe Brady gave an update on C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s health prior to start of the team’s fourth day of training camp on Monday.
Brady refrained from giving a timetable on when Gardner-Johnson will return from the calf strain that he suffered in practice on Aug. 1. However, he did state before the media that the veteran safety is in a good place following the injury.
“I think, any time you see a lower body extremity injury, in the manner in which some of those happen, there’s always a bad possibility with it,” Brady said. “But we got good news, and we’ll see how his body recovers.”
Gardner-Johnson was carted off of the practice field at training camp after sustaining the injury. He will now work toward returning to the field for
Buffalo.
The Bills signed Gardner-Johnson to a one-year, $3.5 million deal in free agency this offseason. He won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the 2024 NFL season. Gardner-Johnson led the NFL in interceptions in 2022 with six as a member of the Eagles.
Gardner-Johnson looks poised to start at safety for the Bills next to Cole Bishop in 2026... depending on his injury status prior to the start of the season.
Without Gardner-Johnson, the likes of Damar Hamlin and fifth-round rookie Jalon Kilgore are expected to see playing time with the starting defense at training camp.
