Good news for Buffalo fans and those with mixed or negative feelings about the team's new alternate jerseys.
Red helmets are back.
The Bills new "Nickel City" alternates — all gray, with a charging stripe across the helmet — landed to mixed reviews at best, and the immediate question inside Bills Mafia wasn't whether the gray was good. It was whether the gray had cost them the red helmets.
It didn't.
FanDuel's Zach Cohen posted Monday that team sources tell him Buffalo "still plans to keep their red alternate helmet this season.," with WKBW sports' Matt Bove confirming the look's return Tuesday, tying it to a holiday date — which points squarely at a particular game on the calendar.

on a major holiday. A red-helmet throwback on that stage would be a dream scenario for Bills fans and their marketing department alike.
The red helmet is the four-straight-Super-Bowls helmet — Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith — and Buffalo hadn't worn it in a game since 2010 before bringing it back last season. In a year where the head coach is new, the coordinator is new and the stadium is new, that helmet is one of the things on the field that connects 2026 to their franchise's history.
Here's the catch Cohen flagged, and it's a real one. The NFL caps clubs at four uniform sets, not counting the league's "free" Rivalries entry. Buffalo now has the primary blue, the white, the Color Rush red and the new Nickel City gray — with the red-helmet throwback attached to that rotation.
Something has to go, and the casualty may be the AFL-era white "Standing Buffalo" throwback. One of the most recognizable throwback uniforms in franchise history. But it's also been fairly dormant: Buffalo last wore the set in 2021 before pulling it back out for a Week 11 win over the Buccaneers to commemorate the final season in the old Highmark Stadium.
While fans might want to sacrifice the gray alternates instead, but they are here to stay this season.
The red helmet is a connection to the past and a reminder of the winning standard. Brandon Beane has been blunt all summer that this roster exists to win a championship inside Allen's prime.
The red helmet is a reminder of where they are trying to go, to the Super Bowl.
