New York Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy proved himself to be far more competent than his critics perceived in his Week 7 performance versus the Houston Texans.
The Giants' 27-21 overtime victory over the Texans featured many memorable moments, but McCarthy's poise and precision will be a reference point for him to sustain momentum moving ahead.
Numerous naysayers mocked the idea of McCarthy being named the starter in sports media early last week, including Emmanuel Acho who says "he will not apologize" for his pessimism regarding McCarthy in spite of the Giants recent win.

Unlike Acho, several
other experts and analysts ate their words, crediting McCarthy and head coach John Harbaugh.

Surely, Harbaugh has to be satisfied with his decision to name McCarthy the starter after Jameis Winston struggled against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6.
McCarthy completed 20 of his 28 passing attempts, connecting with eight different receivers on Sunday afternoon. More importantly, however, McCarthy was able to stick within the game plan with his distribution, and he made sure to target wide receiver Malik Nabers nine times in the victory.
ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes was ultimately astounded by McCarthy's 42-yard pass to Nabers in the first quarter on a tight window throw that set the tone for the entire game and was a highlight in the team's initial touchdown drive.
McCarthy doesn't need to be a superhero to succeed, but he does have the necessary skill set to be serviceable in offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's system. With running backs Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary lessening the load for McCarthy, an ability to make precise reads and target the talents should continue McCarthy's upward trend.
Hopefully, McCarthy will dedicate himself to making sure he is putting an emphasis on pre-snap reads to avoid the pass rush in upcoming matchups. Nevertheless, with starting quarterback Jaxson Dart on injured reserve (IR), the Giants will look to McCarthy to propel the franchise late into the 2026 NFL season.
