The New York Giants elevated quarterback Jake Haener and outside linebacker Trace Ford from the practice squad on Saturday, standard elevations ahead of Sunday’s Week 4 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Both are their first elevations this season.
Haener’s path back to the active roster is more familiar. He was signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster to serve as Jameis Winston’s backup in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans, then waived after the Giants acquired J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings and re-signed to the practice squad.
Haener returns with Winston entrenched as the starter and the roles behind him still unset.
Head coach John Harbaugh said Friday that the staff is not ready to define how McCarthy and Haener will
be used, noting that Haener has been with the team a little over a month and is further along in the offense than the newly acquired McCarthy.
Ford’s elevation adds edge depth with Brian Burns out for the season after tearing his ACL against the Tennessee Titans. The Giants signed Jihad Ward off the Vikings’ practice squad earlier in the week to help replace that production, and Ford gives them another body at the position.
The undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State had a strong summer, appearing in all three preseason games and generating eight quarterback pressures, including a sack.
