New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston is not treating a win, or a 3-1 record, as a finish line.
On Wednesday, Winston said another full week of preparation felt good, and so did the victory that came before it. Neither changed what he wants from the offense before Sunday's NFC East game against the Washington Commanders.
"My desire is still to get better and better. It felt good to get a win, but I desire to be so much better for this team and to play faster, to play more precise, to really be my very best, and I just want to keep getting one percent better every day," Winston told reporters.
Asked what 3-1 means to the locker room with Washington next, Winston said the team is grateful, then brought the week back to Wednesday.
"Oh, man, we're
grateful for where we're at, but at the end of the day, it's a Wednesday. We're playing against a great division opponent, so we had to win today. Today we had a pretty good practice, but every single day that we are here preparing, we're getting one percent better to give ourselves a chance to be our very best on Sunday, when it matters most," he said.
Playing faster, in Winston's view, also means getting wide receiver Malik Nabers the ball more often. Nabers had talked about finding more explosive plays in the second half after what Winston called an amazing first half. Winston's answer was direct.
"Find him. I think it's as simple as that. Find him and make sure that I'm intentional with letting him touch the ball; we're intentional with letting him touch the ball. I mean, he had an amazing first half. We've got to keep building off that and make sure that -- I've got to do a better job of making sure our best players are touching the ball consistently," Winston said.
He said those conversations are constant because the Giants want to be the best offense they can be, and that cannot happen without Nabers, Isaiah Likely, Theo Johnson and Cam Skattebo at their best. Getting them the football, he said, is his job and the coaching staff's job.
Winston sees Nabers every day. He said the receiver has gotten much better since his rookie year while working back from a significant injury, and that Nabers is capable of being the best receiver in the NFL.
Washington is the opponent. The record is 3-1. The standard Winston described has not moved.
