Cam Skattebo’s overtime fumble crystallized the New York Giants’ ongoing ball-security concerns in Sunday’s tie with the Washington Commanders.
The running back fought for extra yards after the two-minute warning when the situation called for a more conservative approach, and the resulting turnover left the Giants relying on their defense to preserve the result.
Head coach John Harbaugh outlined the plan the staff settled on in training camp. The idea was to run the ball twice, continue running to get as close as possible while protecting the football, and then take a knee so Washington would have no time remaining if the field goal was missed. That approach never fully materialized.
“That’s the strategy. That’s the strategy we decided on early
in training camp, and that’s the strategy we’ll probably do next time, too,” Harbaugh said. “Skatt knows he’s got to — Skat played a hell of a game, but he’s gonna have to learn from that.
"And I think everybody’s gotta learn from that. What type of running is called for in that situation? We practice that very situation plenty of times. I expect him to be accountable. I know he will; he already was. And he’ll do better next time, so we gotta learn from that.”
Harbaugh described the preferred method as straight-ahead, downhill running. Centering the ball or fighting for additional yards risked the very outcome that occurred. He has seen similar situations before and noted that the field goal range the Giants reached was makeable but not automatic.
The fumble fit a broader pattern the coaching staff has emphasized. Harbaugh acknowledged that ball security has not yet reached an unacceptable threshold, but the group must continue pursuing improvement rather than accepting current results.
“Gotta keep chasing it. I mean, that’s the thing. You just can’t throw your hands up and say, ‘Well, we’re just not good at it.’ We have to believe in our players,” Harbaugh said. “We understand that at some point in time, it becomes unacceptable, but we’re not there yet. We’ve got guys that want to do the right thing, and we have to, as a team, as an offense, we have to get to the point where we protect the football.”
Jameis Winston, who had fumbled earlier in the third quarter, expressed support for Skattebo afterward.
“My view of that was, ‘Thank the Lord that our defense made a stop for us to get a tie.’ Cam Skattebo is one of our best players. I had a fumble early in the 3rd quarter that hurt us. We have each other’s back regardless, and I always have his back,” Winston said. “Like I said, there’s always learning moments in every single game, and I am happy that we are able to learn from this with the tie. Would I want it to be a win? Of course I want it to be a win. But the fact is, it’s a tie. So, we have to stick together, we have to continue to be a family, and we have to eliminate the negatives and build on the positives.”
Skattebo took ownership of the play.
“First off, I fumbled the ball. We can’t have that. I understand that. I’m going to go into the film room and get it fixed. I felt like I had good protection on it. The kid made a hell of a play,” Skattebo said. “I think in that situation what I think I could do differently is try not to get the extra yards because we’re already in a good position and continue to take care of the ball.
"If I get tackled for a loss at one yard, then I get tackled for a loss at one yard. I’m the player that tries to fight for as many yards as possible for this team. It kind of bit me in the ass there. I got to make sure I protect the ball for this football team. We win that game if I do.”
He described the emotions of watching from the sideline and then seeing Washington drive.
“It sucked. It sucked. Our defenses came in clutch multiple times this year. I have my trust in them. Obviously I didn’t fumble on purpose to put my trust on my defense, but I know my defense is out there that will be okay. They were able to pull it out. We at least tied,” Skattebo said. “Obviously, it sucked. I messed up a play. I gave the ball up and that sucks. It sucks to be a part of that.
"Every emotion you could possibly think when the other team has the ball past the 50-yard line goes through your head. It’s your fault, everything. I think the best players that come out of those things are the best players. The people that are able to move past that and go into next week and take care of the ball and win the game.”
As the clock ran out, Skattebo reflected on the unusual finish.
“That was insane. The fact that they even let that happen. I guess God has my back in a way. I got to be better for this team. Especially at the end of the game there," he said.
The Giants will carry both the specific lesson from the overtime sequence and the broader ball-security mandate into the coming week. Harbaugh expects accountability from Skattebo and continued progress from the offense as a whole.
The tie preserved a result that could have gone the other way, but the repeated emphasis on protecting the football makes clear that similar mistakes will remain a point of emphasis until the group closes the gap.
