New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's early grade on quarterback J.J. McCarthy is an A-plus.
Nine days into the installation, Nagy said McCarthy is much further along than he was a week ago, when the same question came up in the same setting.
"I would say it's an A-plus. He's doing really well. That's as best as I can put it," Nagy told reporters on Thursday.
Nagy credited quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan and offensive quality control coach Mike Snyder, along with the time the position coaches are spending with McCarthy and with Jake Haener. He also credited McCarthy. Nagy said the quarterback is putting in a lot of time trying to learn everything.
The praise came with a boundary. Nagy said he is proud of the start, and that this is only
the beginning.
Any package will be built around what the staff already believes are McCarthy's strengths. Nagy said that even on a short week, the coaches were starting to get a feel for that, and that the install starts there rather than with a full menu of calls.
"You start with minimal plays," Nagy said.
The harder piece is everything else on the call sheet. Nagy said both McCarthy and Haener have to know the entire game plan at all times, which he called the more challenging part of the preparation. The staff can build a package around McCarthy's strengths. Deciding when to use it, and whether to use it, comes after that.
Nagy did not put a timetable on the decision. He described the work as ongoing, with Haener staying current alongside McCarthy in case the situation changes.
That is the whole of the update. McCarthy is ahead of where he was seven days ago. The install is going well. The package stays small until the staff decides it should be anything else.
