The New York Giants released veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton on Monday, ending a seven-year tenure that began when New York drafted him in the fifth round in 2019.
Slayton made the initial 53-man roster last weekend, only to be let go days before Sunday night’s opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
Interest arrived quickly. Josina Anderson of Exhibit News Network reports that three teams have already reached out for preliminary discussions. Anderson did not name those clubs.
Separate from those talks, she flagged the Indianapolis Colts because of Slayton’s relationship with quarterback Daniel Jones, then clarified Indianapolis is not among the first three.
Another team to keep an eye on is the Tennessee Titans, where former Giants head coach Brian
Daboll now serves as offensive coordinator. He already brought wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and tight end Daniel Bellinger to Nashville.
Slayton, 29, was entering Year 2 of a three-year, $36 million deal. The post-June 1 release saves the Giants just under $3 million this season. He underwent core-muscle surgery in April and never fully regained his burst, playing 33 snaps without a target in the preseason finale.
Last season, Slayton caught 37 passes for 538 yards and one touchdown. Career totals in New York: 296 receptions, 4,435 yards and 22 scores in 106 games.
