The New York Giants signed running back Eric Gray to their practice squad on Monday and released defensive lineman Josh Tupou from the practice squad in the corresponding move.
Gray returns to the organization that selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Oklahoma. The 26-year-old spent the offseason program and training camp with the Giants before being released during final roster cutdowns. He later spent time on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad.
In his previous tenure with New York, Gray appeared in 34 games, primarily as a depth option in the backfield and as a kick returner. He recorded 21 kickoff returns in 2024, averaging 26.4 yards per return. His skill set aligns with the type of back the Giants have utilized in recent
weeks.
The addition comes as the Giants manage depth at the position. Starter Cam Skattebo has been dealing with a hamstring injury, while Tyrone Tracy Jr. is on injured reserve (IR) with his own hamstring issue. The Giants recently signed Gregory Desrosiers to the active roster from the Los Angeles Chargers’ practice squad to help address the group.
Tupou, a veteran interior defensive lineman, had been with the Giants at multiple points this season, including earlier stints on the practice squad and active roster. His release clears a spot for Gray as New York continues to navigate its roster through the middle of the season.
The Giants enter their Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles with a 4-2-1 record and the lead in the NFC East.
