New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo was flagged for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans after lowering his helmet while running through safety M.J. Stewart.
The personal foul resulted in a 15-yard penalty and wiped out the play with the Giants leading 7-3.

Officials cited Skattebo for initiating contact with the crown of his helmet, a league point of emphasis on running plays. Head coach John Harbaugh immediately confronted the referees, arguing on the sideline that the contact occurred within the normal violence of the game. He noted that a runner
meeting a defender in the hole has little time to adjust and is primarily focused on protecting himself while trying to gain yardage.
The penalty continued a season-long pattern for Skattebo, who was fined earlier this year for illegal helmet contact on a similar run against the Tennessee Titans. That prior discipline appears to have placed him under heightened scrutiny from officials.
Video of the play showed Stewart also coming in with his head down, prompting questions about whether the flag accurately reflected one-sided initiation or simply punished a hard-nosed, physical style that has defined Skattebo’s approach.
The call nullified what many viewed as a standard football collision rather than an egregious act.
