New York Giants safety Jevon Holland has spent six years being asked to be someone else. Six defensive coordinators. Four head coaches. A different assignment every season, plus the sprains that never quite let him play at full capacity.
This fall, Holland says the player on the field is the one he has been describing all along.
“I am who I think I am, and I’m proud of myself for that,” Holland told the New York Post last week
.He is not hanging the month on the turnovers alone. The interceptions, including the end-zone pick that closed out Tennessee, are the receipt. The work, Holland said, has been there for a long time.
“I’ve been doing the right thing for a long time, and the ball’s coming my way just ’cause the football gods are allowing it.
But I feel like this year I’ve been on my (expletive). I feel good, I feel good about it," he said.
Asked about a September Ed Reed would have recognized, he deferred to the standard and called Reed the greatest of all time.
The place he wants to keep doing it is New York. Holland said he loves the building, the people in it, the fans and the locker room, and that he feels wanted by an organization that actually cares about its players. He wants to finish his career here. He wants the wins and a Super Bowl to come with that decision.
"I feel loved and wanted and this is like an organization that really cares about the people that are on the team. And I love being a part of that," Holland said.
After years of being redirected, the Giants are getting the player who finally trusts his instincts, in the city where he wants to stay.
