John Harbaugh praised the New York Giants’ mental toughness after Sunday’s tie with the Washington Commanders, pointing to the players’ ability to overcome adversity as one of the clearest takeaways from the game.
The Giants trailed by 14 points before rallying to force overtime and ultimately leave with a result that ended a long historical drought in similar situations.
Entering the day, the Giants were 0-230 since 1970 when trailing by 14 or more points in the final eight minutes of regulation. The tie moved that mark to 0-230-1.

Harbaugh graded the group’s heart, grit, and
mental toughness as “A plus, plus, plus.” He said that quality showed up throughout the afternoon and left him proud of the response, even as he noted room for growth in consistency and the smaller details.
“First of all, let’s talk about the Giants fans. Wow. I mean, our fans were loud,” Harbaugh told reporters. “As far as the game, we can learn so much. But the one thing that has become very evident is what is inside of our players. Their heart, their grit, their mental toughness, their ability to overcome adversity is A plus, plus, plus. And that showed up today, so I’m very proud of that. And I’m also very excited for the fact that we can improve so much.”
Harbaugh was direct about how he viewed the final score when speaking with the team. He told the players it was neither a win nor a loss.
“I told the guys, ‘Was it a win?’ No. ‘Was it a loss?’ No. It was a tie. ‘How does that make you feel?’ I’m happy it wasn’t a loss and I’m sad it wasn’t a win. So that’s how I feel,” Harbaugh said. “It’s a heck of a lot better than a loss, but it’s not as good as a win. So I know that just sounds so obvious, but that’s kind of how you feel. I mean, we’ve had a lot of these conversations over the years. We’ll take it. We’ll take it right now. We were down 14. Came back, and we got a tie, alright?”
Harbaugh acknowledged that the Giants should not have fallen behind by 14 points in the first place and that they allowed Jayden Daniels to run too freely.
With the season still early, the focus now turns to the next game. The comeback and the historical rarity of the result provided a measurable example of the resilience Harbaugh highlighted, even if the outcome left both sides of the ledger incomplete.
