New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh and Miami Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley are preparing for a joint practice on Thursday with a shared emphasis on controlled competition and player development rather than trying to outscheme one another.
Harbaugh said the teams have established clear "rules of engagement." Those standards will stress protecting quarterbacks, staying off the ground, and avoiding blindside shots in favor of front-up thuds.
The goal, he explained, is to create a productive environment in which both sides can evaluate their players against different schemes and talent while keeping the sessions competitive yet safe.
"He talks to his team. We talk to our team. We have the same rules of engagement. And it'll be the same that we use
in our practice," Harbaugh told reporters on Tuesday.
Hafley has taken a similar stance. He views the joint work as far more valuable than a traditional preseason dress-rehearsal game in which starters play deep into the third quarter. With practice scheduled for Thursday and a preseason game following on Saturday, high snap counts in practice would leave little recovery time.
Hafley prefers to give his starters quality reps against the Giants and then manage their workloads carefully. He made clear that the sessions are not about confusing the Giants or winning the practice with exotic blitzes and trick plays.
“I’m not looking to see if we can outsmart a coaching staff in a preseason practice,” Hafley said. “What’s important is building the foundation the right way. I want to see who can go up against their really good edge rushers and block them one-on-one. Can we cover an elite wide receiver one-on-one and use good fundamentals and technique?”
Hafley described the focus as fundamentals, technique, toughness and effort. Those elements, he believes, reveal which players can perform when the game gets hard. Scheme adjustments and protection of weaknesses can wait until the regular season. Trying to scheme for practice wins, he added, would be driven more by ego than by genuine team improvement.
Harbaugh has echoed the value of facing a different opponent, calling the joint practice more interesting and useful for evaluation than another day of internal work. Both coaches appear aligned on using the upcoming sessions to push their players, identify strengths and weaknesses, and prepare for the season while limiting unnecessary risk.
The Giants will travel to Miami on Wednesday and begin the joint work under those shared guidelines on Thursday.
