The New York Giants are signing quarterback Jake Haener to the active roster from the practice squad, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Wednesday. He will join J.J. McCarthy behind starter Jameis Winston.
The move comes as wide receiver Braxton Berrios (foot) is headed to injured reserve (IR) after a punt-return injury in Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals. Berrios has said he will undergo season-ending surgery.
Haener's path with New York has already been a loop. He was in camp, waived at final cuts, and returned to the practice squad to open the season. After Jaxson Dart was lost for the year with a knee injury, the Giants signed him to the 53-man roster ahead of Week 3 to back up Winston against the Tennessee Titans.
Two days later,
after trading for McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings, they waived Haener. He cleared and returned to the practice squad.
He was elevated for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, his first standard elevation of the season after that waiver. Head coach John Harbaugh said last week that Haener is further along in the offense than the newly acquired McCarthy.
A fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2023, Haener appeared in eight games with one start in 2024, completing 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
