New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said the staff has built an offense that belongs to this team, not a copy of schemes from Kansas City or Chicago.
Nagy learned the game through Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg in Philadelphia and carried that foundation forward. In New York, making the system the Giants’ own has been one of the most enjoyable parts of the job.
“I’m excited to see how this thing goes this year, because I think you’re going to see it’s our offense,” Nagy told reporters on Thursday. “It’s no other offense from prior history. You know, it’s ours.”
Personnel flexibility is central to that identity. The Giants have only four wide receivers on the 53-man roster, but Nagy said the group has the staff’s confidence. Tight end
Isaiah Likely adds formation creativity, and coaches have required receivers, tight ends and fullbacks to know every role.
“I think that’s one of the strengths that we’ll have, is being able to be multiple in personnels,” Nagy said. “What we’ve done is we’ve challenged these receivers, these tight ends, the fullbacks, to know everything. And so, as a coach, what that does is it allows you to be multiple, and then it’s our job on game day to be able to really just make adjustments to what we see and let these guys play fast.”
This week’s plan compiled work from OTAs through training camp. Preseason offered clues.
“We honestly don’t know yet, we’ll know after Sunday night where we stand as an offense,” Nagy said. “And that’s the exciting part.”
Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys and a first-time defensive coordinator will show how much of that homegrown scheme and personnel flexibility is ready.
