New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh explained the decision to release running back Najee Harris as a matter of roster direction rather than production.
The move came after Harris had been with the team for a short period. Harbaugh noted the practical challenges of maintaining depth at the position while addressing other roster needs.
"It was more about just, alright, we're going to set a course," Harbaugh told reporters on Friday. "And it's hard to carry four backs. There were some other moves we had to make to get guys on the roster."
Harbaugh told Harris directly that the choice had nothing to do with his effort or output. The coach described Harris as a hard runner who often operated in limited space during his recent opportunities.
"I thought
he ran super hard," Harbaugh said. "I didn't think he had a lot of room, in all fairness, in the plays he happened to have in the last couple of weeks, but it was just the direction we decided to go at this time going forward. So, nothing that he did or didn't do."
The Giants will now move forward with the remaining running backs on the roster -- Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary. Harbaugh indicated those players will receive opportunities to show what they can do as the team continues its season.
The decision reflects the ongoing process of shaping the roster for the weeks ahead. With limited spots available, the organization chose to prioritize other additions at this stage of the year.
