Former New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton’s short stay in Indianapolis ended Friday when the Colts released the veteran wide receiver just 24 days after signing him.
The Colts added the former Giant on September 22 as a free agent to provide a downfield threat while Alec Pierce recovered from a heel injury on injured reserve. Slayton also arrived with prior experience catching passes from Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, his former teammate in New York. He never appeared in a game.
Slayton was a healthy scratch in Weeks 3 and 4 while learning the offense. A knee injury suffered in practice then kept him out of the Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He returned to practice as a full participant this week, but the Colts chose
to move on rather than activate him.
“He had some good weeks of practice. Ultimately, it just didn't work out, and I think those happen,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters this week. “I’ve got a lot of respect for him, what he's done in this league, and I wish him the best going forward.”
Slayton spent seven seasons with the Giants after they selected him in the fifth round of the 2019 draft out of Auburn. He finished with 296 receptions for 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns across 106 games.
The 29-year-old is once again a free agent after the Giants released him in early September.
