The New York Giants are waiving quarterback Jake Haener two days after signing him to the active roster for Week 3.
Haener is expected to clear waivers and return to the practice squad as the third-string quarterback, a sign New York is not adding another passer for now.

The move follows New York’s trade for J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick, pending a physical. McCarthy, 23, was the 10th overall pick in 2024 out of Michigan
after winning a national title under Jim Harbaugh. He missed his rookie season with a knee injury, then started 10 games last year and went 6-4 with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Vikings signed Kyler Murray this offseason and kept Carson Wentz, making McCarthy expendable. Giants starter Jaxson Dart is out for the season after surgery to repair his meniscus, MCL, and PCL. Jameis Winston started Sunday’s 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans, with Haener elevated as his Week 3 backup.
John Harbaugh said last week the Giants wanted to add a quarterback or two. McCarthy now projects as Winston’s primary backup and a possible starter until Dart returns next season.
