New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh defended outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux’s contributions this season during his Wednesday press conference, arguing that the box score does not capture the full picture of his impact.
Harbaugh was asked whether the Giants simply need more production from Thibodeaux on the edge. He pushed back on that framing.
“I think you guys are underestimating what Kayvon’s bringing to the table,” Harbaugh told reporters. “The plays that he’s making and the contribution he’s making. Everybody wants to talk about stats. Stats are important. They’re production. That’s a big thing. But the tape is what tells the story. I think if you study the tape, you’ll see a lot of really good plays. A lot of very physical plays and a lot of good football
plays. And production will come off of that.”
Harbaugh then pointed to the final play of the Giants’ 27-27 overtime tie with the Washington Commanders as an example that does not appear in the traditional stat sheet. On that snap, with the Commanders in field-goal range and the clock running, Thibodeaux disrupted the throwing lane and forced quarterback Jayden Daniels to tuck the ball and scramble.
Daniels was tackled, time expired, and the game ended in a tie rather than a potential game-winning kick for Washington.
“Pretty darn good play,” Harbaugh said. “That’s not in the stat sheet, though, is it? He took that throw away, and the quarterback decided to tuck it and ended up tying us the game. So, that was a great football play. And there were other plays like that. So, I would say he’s playing very well.”
Thibodeaux entered the week without a sack and with limited traditional counting stats through five games. Harbaugh’s comments frame those numbers as secondary to the physical plays visible on film, with the expectation that the production will follow.
The Giants host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
