Darius Slayton offered a brief, gracious farewell Monday after the New York Giants released him, ending a seven-year stay that began as a fifth-round pick in 2019.
“Grateful for my time in NY. 7 years a Giant nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL. Excited to see what’s next,” Slayton posted on X.
The 29-year-old receiver survived last weekend’s cut to the initial 53-man roster only to be let go days before Sunday night’s opener against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.
Slayton was in Year 2 of a three-year, $36 million deal with a 2026 cap hit near $15.9 million. As a post-June 1 cut, New York saves about $3.16 million this season while absorbing $12.75 million in dead money now and $3 million in 2027.
He
underwent core-muscle surgery in April and never fully regained his burst. In Friday’s preseason finale against the Jets, he played 33 snaps without a target. Last season he caught 37 passes for 538 yards and one score in 14 games. Career totals: 296 receptions, 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns in 106 games.
Malik Nabers is trending toward Week 1, rookie Malachi Fields has earned a featured role, and Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham Jr. have moved ahead. Slayton now hits free agency as a low-cost option six days before kickoff.
