Asked about running back Devin Singletary after the New York Giants' walkthrough on Wednesday, head coach John Harbaugh reached for a word he does not throw around lightly.
“Oh, man, what better praise could you have?” Harbaugh said. “I mean, the word, the biblical word is faithful. You can trust him. You can believe that he’s going to be doing the right thing as best he can, to the best of his ability. And he’s got a lot of ability, too. You don’t want to say, okay, because you can say that description of it, that means he’s not talented; he’s super talented.”
Sunday night is the reason the question came up. Tyrone Tracy Jr. fumbled on his second carry against the Dallas Cowboys and did not return on offense. Singletary took the work that followed,
finishing with six carries for 16 yards and four catches for 22 yards and a touchdown in a 28-20 win.
The score that made it 28-14 came late, on a 13-play drive that lived in the left flat. Jaxson Dart hit Singletary for 13 yards on third-and-9, seven yards on the next look and nine yards for the touchdown. Harbaugh said it was the same element of plays, not the same play, and that Dart kept throwing it until the Giants got into the end zone.
The snap count told the rest. Singletary played 25 snaps and ran a route on half of New York’s dropbacks. Cam Skattebo handled the heavy lifting on the ground, 18 carries for 81 yards and a score, and was not targeted. That is the split Harbaugh has trusted Singletary to execute since the veteran restructured his contract in March to stay in a crowded backfield.
Tracy missed Wednesday’s session with the flu. Najee Harris is still ramping up and remains a decision for later in the week. The Rams are next on Monday night in Los Angeles. None of that changed Harbaugh’s read on the back, who stepped up when the others were putting the ball on the ground.
"He played really well. Obviously, he made a big difference in the game," the coach added.
