The New York Giants will keep Bryan Hudson at center for at least one more week after he handled the job cleanly against the Washington Commanders.
Head coach John Harbaugh said the decision rested on recent performance rather than a permanent change in the depth chart. Hudson started in place of John Michael Schmitz against the Arizona Cardinals and again on Sunday, and the staff saw enough in both outings to stay the course.
“He played well. He played well. He played well in the game the week before, and he played well in this past game. Things he can do better, but things he did really well, and that’s what we based it on,” Harbaugh told reporters on Monday.
Harbaugh confirmed Hudson will open as the starter this week while Schmitz remains in the plans.
“We will for this week. We will for this week. He’ll be the starter. JMS will still be in the plans. He could play, but Huddy will be the starter,” Harbaugh said.
The move began when Schmitz missed practice time around the birth of his first child. Hudson took the first-team snaps, started against Arizona, and kept the role when the Giants traveled to Washington. Harbaugh had previously described the switch as temporary and noted that the team likes both centers.
Sunday’s results simply extended the current arrangement rather than closing the competition. Hudson will get the next opportunity, with Schmitz available if the situation changes.
